- Heterotrophs cannot produce their own food; they eat other things (organic molecules) in order to obtain energy to survive. Examples include most species of bacteria and protists, as well as all fungi and animals.
- Autotrophs get their energy from light and other inorganic molecules.
- Photoautotrophs use light energy to make organic molecules from inorganic molecules via photosynthesis. Examples include green plants, algae, and some prokaryotic species.
