Introduction to Chemistry & the Scientific Method

Chemistry: An Introduction

  • To understand the importance of learning chemistry.

What is Chemistry?

  • To define chemistry.
    • Chemistry can be defined as the science that deals with the materials of the universe and the changes that these materials undergo.

Solving Problems Using a Scientific Approach

  • To understand scientific thinking.
    • Make an observation- recognize the problem and state it clearly.
    • Formulate a hypothesis- propose possible solutions to the problem or possible explanations for the observation.
    • Perform an experiment- decide which of the solutions is the best or decide whether the explanation proposed is reasonable by seeking new information.

The Scientific Method

  • To describe the method scientists use to study nature.
    • Steps in the scientific method:
      • State the problem and collect data (make observations.)
      • Formulate hypotheses.
      • Perform experiments.
    • A law tells what happens; a theory (model) is an attempt to explain why it happens.

      Key Terms

    1. Chemistry- the science that deals with the materials of the universe and the changes that these materials undergo
    2. Measurement- a quantitative observation
    3. Hypothesis- a possible explanation for an observation
    4. Experiment- a test of a hypothesis
    5. Theory (model)- a set of tested hypotheses that gives an overall explanations of some part of nature; an interpretation of why nature behaves in a particular way
    6. Natural Law- a formulation of generally observed behavior
