Brief Notes on the Periodic Table of the Elements

  • Periodic table- atomic numbers increase
  • Columns are groups, rows are periods
  • Groups have similar properties
  • First two groups and last six groups are the representative elements, they are more predictable than the other elements
  • Groups three through twelve are transition metals
  • The detached portion should be inserted into table above- space saving to put them elsewhere
  • Noble gases- don’t react well with anything
  • Alkali metals- very reactive, does not include hydrogen
  • Alkaline earth metals- very reactive but not as much as group 1
  • Transition metals are pretty similar to each other
  • Metalloids- above and below the “stair-step”
  • Metals- shiny, easily shaped, conduct electricity.
